The Soft Power of Textiles

Textiles possess immense power, functioning not only as physical protection and a fundamental human need but also as a profound medium for artistic expression, social protest, and historical storytelling. They are often described as "poetic metaphors woven from ideas" that reflect the ingenuity, culture, and social structure of humanity.

Mission

Americans are known for expressing themselves, especially through art.  As one of the oldest artforms, textile arts have illustrated our history for over 250 years.  Tapestries, embroidery, quilting, and, more recently, mixed media works have served to illustrate our ups and downs as a country and society.  United We Stitch strives to continue this tradition by bringing citizens together to share their hopes for our democracy’s future through the art of textiles.

United We Stitch: Creating unity through art.

Vision

United We Stitch invites individuals, groups, and organizations to express their love for America through flag-sized cloth panels to be displayed in communities across the nation, as well as online.

We invite you to use art to express your hopes for America’s future, to visually articulate your personal or broader vision of our country’s path forward. What do you love about America? What future do you desire for all of us?

Simply create a 3’ x 5’ (home flag size) cloth-based panel, oriented horizontally (landscape, not portrait) that expresses your dreams for America. In addition to fabric, you may use paint and/or other media.

United We Stitch is a community call to action. If you believe the United States of America is a country for one and all, we urge you to participate.
